Totem poles totem cactuses

I was up in Idlewild, CA recently trying to get away from the insane heat in Palm Springs. I was cooling down on a lovely garden deck when a very unusual plant caught my eye. It was a totem cactus. I was in Vancouver, British Columbia in June and couldn’t resist taking a shot of the beautiful native art on the Island (I believe the art below is Haida). To the left is a mini totem pole. I put it beside a photo of a the totem cactus. The smooth, rounded surfaces of the wood parallel the beautiful smoothness of the cactus. What a cool plant!

If you like cactuses and have pets or kids, a totem pole cactus is a good choice because it completely lacks spines! It’s very soft and smooth but is perfectly happy being left alone in warm sun with very little water.
